What to film — pitchers

Film every pitch you throw from two camera angles, from the windup and from the stretch. The two angles let a coach see movement, extension and how the ball comes out.

One bullpen, a tripod, and about 30 minutes.

Before you shoot

Four rules for the whole tape.

Recent, and clearly your pitcher

Film from this season or last. A coach should know in two seconds exactly who they're watching.

Tripod, landscape, don't zoom

A steady shot matters more than a close one. Shoot horizontally and keep the release and the catcher's glove in frame. A coach can only see movement if the whole flight of the ball is in the shot.

No name or contact cards

Evaluations are anonymous both ways. Leave off name, school, and contact info. We remove identifying details before any coach sees the film.

The shot list

Film the full list from angle 1, then film the same list again from angle 2. Call out each pitch type as you go, or label the clips, so coaches know whether a pitch was a slider or a cutter.

Angle 1 — off the mound, behind

For right-handed pitchers: camera three feet to the right of the mound and five feet behind it. Left-handed pitchers: three feet to the left. This is the angle that shows ball movement.

Angle 2 — behind the batter's box

For right-handed pitchers: camera three feet behind the right-handed batter's box. Left-handed pitchers: three feet behind the left-handed box. This is the hitter's view.
